Brendan Fraser and More Actors Address Wearing Fat Suits for Roles

After dealing with backlash for wearing a fat suit, celebrities corresponding to Chris Sullivan and Sarah Paulson opened up about taking up their respective roles.

Brendan Fraser won critical acclaim after playing the lead in the 2022 psychological drama The Whale. The movie, which is in line with a play through Samuel D. Hunter of the same identify, tells the tale of a 600-pound man who tries to reconnect with his daughter following the death of his spouse.

Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, director Darren Aronofsky answered to critics who questioned his decision to cast Fraser instead of a larger actor.

“There was once a bankruptcy in the making of this film the place we tried to research actors with obesity,” he told Variety in October 2022, one month sooner than the film’s debut. “Outside of now not being able to to find an actor who may pull off the feelings of the position, it simply turns into a loopy chase. Like, if you'll be able to’t discover a 600-pound actor, is a 300-pound actor or 400-pound actor sufficient?”

The Mummy actor, for his phase, detailed the research he did while working on the project — including a comfort with the Obesity Action Coalition.

“They let me know what their diet was once and how obesity had affected their lives relating to their relationships with loved ones,” he defined in regards to the advocacy team. “It used to be heartbreaking, because very often those people have been mocked and made to feel awful about themselves. Vindictive speech is painful. And it does injury because it feeds into the cycle of overeating. I simply left those conversations considering, ‘Hey, this isn't your fault. This is an illness. This is an dependancy.’”

Meanwhile, Sullivan had a different approach after receiving backlash for his prosthetics in This is Us.

“There is a lot of things to be outraged about this present day, and I think that getting outraged about an actor on a tv show who could also be wearing a dressing up that makes him greater than he is, could be low at the record,” the actor, who played Toby in the hit NBC series, shared throughout an interview at the Today display in 2017. “At least in my view. If I'm really not portraying Toby with the extent of integrity or honesty — [if] you disagree with [that], I might be at liberty to talk about that. But I believe that without reference to the costumes that I put on, particularly with Toby, I try to deliver as much center and honesty as I will.”

Sullivan’s costar and onscreen partner Chrissy Metz also came to his defense.

“We examined numerous gents who have been bigger, and I get it — folks suppose the authenticity is kind of ruined via that. But Chris has been heavier, so I feel he understands the plight of being obese,” Metz mentioned on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that very same 12 months. “Also he was once simply the best guy for the process. And people wear prosthetics all the time — it’s simply weight as opposed to, like, a nose or a chin. It’s simply more or less the name of the game.”
