What can have been. If it used to be as much as Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) would nonetheless be together if the Manchester attorney wasn’t killed off in season 3.
“I actually would!” the Godless actress, 35, exclusively tells Us Weekly. “But I believe they'd their problems. Mary is a shockingly complex personality and I believe that they would have had their problems, I’m positive. But, yea, that’s now not how it went.”
Stevens, 35, decided to leave the loved PBS drama when his contract ended. “We all had a decision whether to continue with the display after 3 years and each and every actor is different and in a distinct stage in their occupation and so Dan and Jessica [Findlay], who performed Sybil, it was once their resolution to go away the show,” Dockery explains. “Sometimes I wonder how different it will have been — the display would were — had they no longer have left. Things clearly really modified for Mary after Matthew died.”
She adds: “I bear in mind the response being so extreme from fanatics. That was something we weren’t anticipating and Dan — he felt it more than any person I guess because folks loved it such a lot at that point.”
Dockery and Stevens knew each different before landing the sequence. They costarred in an adaptation of The Turn of the Screw ahead of they crossed paths during the Downton Abbey audition.
“As I used to be leaving I came out within the ready room and Dan used to be there,” she recalls to Us. “I said to him, ‘Who are you studying for?’ He said, ‘Matthew.’ And he looked at me and stated, ‘Mary?’ And I stated, ‘Yeah.’ We have been like, ‘Cool.’ And as I walked out I assumed, ‘Well, that would paintings.’ But I by no means dreamed that I would get the task. It was once just one of the most memorable days of my occupation — of my life — was getting that part.”

Viewers would cross directly to fall for Mary and Matthew’s romance. For Dockery, her favorite scenes between the characters were when Matthew proposed and when she sent him off at the train station in season 2.
“She provides him the little toy to deliver to struggle with him. I really like that scene and the track,” she says. “I will be able to’t bear in mind how many takes it took nevertheless it used to be this kind of superbly written scene. He was once going off to warfare and she idea she would never see him again. It was one of these stunning scene and it’s the moment when Mary realizes how a lot she loves him.”
Following Matthew’s demise, Mary would go directly to wed Henry Talbot, played by means of Matthew Goode. Both of Mary’s marriage ceremony clothes can now be seen up close in Downton Abbey: The Exhibition in NYC.
“Both have been so gorgeous. But the first one — the beading was once simply improbable. It was once hand-crafted, each single bead. And the lace used to be French lace introduced in by means of Paris. They are unbelievable. I needed to type of be followed round all day after we have been capturing those scenes because the whole thing needed to be picked up as it was once so subtle. And even sitting down I used to be apprehensive about tearing it. The work that went into those costumes were amazing,” Dockery tells Us. “I cherished either one of them as a result of they had been each so other. They have been both stunning in there own manner. The first one was once actually particular though.”

US: Where were you when you landed the role of Lady Mary?
MD: I was sharing a space with 3 different girls in South London and I was in my bed room when I were given the decision from my agent. I take note precisely the place I used to be sitting and the whole thing.
US: What was some of you favourite Mary outfits?
MD: I loved anything that she wore at the property. I cherished any of her driving outfits. The night attire were absolutely amazing. There is this green one with this gold ornate lace, which you can see at the exhibition. That one form of has a prized place on account of how stunning it is and its delicacy. It was a scene at The Ritz with Henry. It used to be a large dinner scene within the remaining season. Even for me walking in and seeing my costumes — it was extremely nostalgic.
US: Mary wasn’t the nicest to Edith. Did you ever jokingly feel unhealthy about that?
MD: People love hearing how shut me and Laura are in actual life. It’s the extraordinary reverse from our characters. We beloved any of those scenes. The more vile to one another the easier for us because we just had a lot of a laugh enjoying the ones scenes. We’d almost get disillusioned if we didn’t see any of the ones kind of things between Edith and Mary. It was once just numerous a laugh to play. Laura [Carmichael] and I have the exact same sense of humor so we would regularly be making an attempt to not snigger all over takes. Just as a result of the sort of irony of it because we beloved each other such a lot in actual lifestyles and yet the characters have been at conflict.
US: What was once your favorite scene between the characters?
MD: It has to be that ultimate scene in the collection where she calls her a whinge. I mean, the article is it used to be such a build up for me and Laura because we knew it was once coming and clearly because we learn the script. But it used to be this kind of big moment. It sort of all needed to come to a head with the ones two. It’s this kind of tough scene and an actual victory second for Edith. And Mary was once steadily the one that always got one over Edith and it completely turned it on its head. And I just loved that episode specifically as a result of Mary was just on a rampage in point of fact to ruin everybody as a result of she was once so unsatisfied. You see Edith in the end loses it with her. It’s a truly tough scene and I thought Laura was so good in that moment.
US: Is the cast in a group textual content?
MD: No, we’re not in a gaggle textual content but we all do be in contact and always desirous about what each other is as much as. And we all the time try to join up up to we can.
US: I learn that you didn’t take memorabilia house.
MD: No, I haven’t! And I pay attention a few of my different cast individuals are all thieves. And they stole things and I didn’t get a chance to. If we do do the movie I’m going to clutch the opportunity.
US: How do you want Mary’s tale to proceed if the rumored film happens?
Thank You!
You have successfully subscribed.
MD: I don’t in reality have any expectancies. Julian [Fellowes] is the only with the pen. But the rumors stay proceeding and I believe it’s just a certain sign that individuals aren’t fairly finished with it.
