
“Designers, make it paintings!” Project Runway contestants have been stitching up a hurricane since 2004 — and some of the winners are nonetheless changing the sport of the rage trade to at the present time.
The long-running reality collection challenges up-and-coming designers to create original garments limited through time, material and theme. From 2004 to 2018, the show was once hosted via Heidi Klum with type guru Tim Gunn appearing as a mentor for the competitors. The longtime costars showed in September 2018 that they would not be returning for the display’s 17th season after signing onto Amazon Prime’s Making the Cut. They had been replaced by Karlie Kloss and season 4 Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.
“We have been in lockstep … I never dreamed that [Project Runway] would have a 2d season,” Gunn instructed Variety in a joint interview with Klum in March 2020. “Who knew? … There’s a love and respect there that we’ll always have.”
Through its greater than 250 episodes, Project Runway has been a champion for diversity and innovation within the model business. Despite dealing with “stigma” for his unconventional upward push to the highest of the design world, Siriano credited his time at the sequence with serving to him transform a household identify.
“Right now, in our global, with what’s taking place in our culture and everything, I feel such as you just have to find new techniques to strengthen your corporate and your emblem. Young designers and young companies are going underneath every single day,” he informed the Washington Post in April 2019. “So I in reality treated it as, ‘I can display the arena what I will be able to do — and perhaps convey a new era of shopper to us.’ And I imply, clearly, when I was on that display, I was 21 years previous — a real child! And now, having a business, Forty employees, a real corporate, people can see what you get started with and what you can turn it into.”
As Kloss and Siriano step into their new roles at the runway, they’ve brought along vibrant new voices on the judges’ panel, like fashion designer Brandon Maxwell and previous editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue Elaine Welteroth.

“I think it’s been cool to turn into the legacy brand of Project Runway into something that feels in point of fact relevant for this second, this time,” Welteroth advised Parade mag in April 2020. “We all had a say and had input. It felt like there used to be no explanation why to proceed on with a legacy brand like Project Runway if it wasn’t going to truly reflect what’s happening in the world right now and if it wasn’t going to be inclusive.”
