Williams was once born in Saginaw, Michigan, in September 1981. She completed her first Career Grand Slam in 2003 at age 21 after winning the US Open, Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open. Her Wimbledon victory in 2002 introduced her to the No. 1 rating for the first time ever.
Although the athlete suffered injuries and handled naysayers, she continued to dominate in her field, earning title after title. She also forged her own path when she failed to find tennis avid gamers with whom she could establish.
“There weren’t a large number of function models for me to look as much as [in the game] and say, ‘Wow, I want to look like this!’ … I kind of had to be that role and be that individual,” Serena explained in her February 2019 Allure cover story. “Venus and I began out being a success, persisted to achieve success, and we had been additionally unapologetically ourselves. We were not afraid to put on braids. We weren’t afraid to be Black in tennis. And that used to be different.”
Along the approach, the tennis big name realized to like herself. “I’m considering doing the easiest that I will be able to and profitable Grand Slams and being a champion and, you know, everyone has different targets. … I’m now not out here thinking, ‘OK, I’m now not going to visit gymnastics elegance lately as a result of I don’t want to look fit,’” she informed Time in 2015 of her body symbol. “I literally was born with this most wonderful frame, and to be historic, and to be superb, and to be badass. And if any person doesn’t find it irresistible, then they don’t must. Because at the end of the day, I like it. And I do know a lot of other people who like it too.”
Serena intends to move on those values to daughter Olympia, whom she welcomed with husband Alexis Ohanian in September 2017. She announced child No. 2 was once on the method in May 2023 when she debuted her rising baby bump on the red carpet at the Met Gala.
Her children are why she made up our minds to retire from tennis in August 2022. “Believe me, I by no means wanted to have to choose between tennis and a circle of relatives,” Serena wrote in an essay for Vogue at the time. “I don’t assume it’s fair. If I have been a guy, I wouldn’t be scripting this because I’d be available in the market taking part in and successful while my spouse was doing the bodily labor of increasing our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.”
